Getting started with MemoAgent

How to set it up, what each person sees, and what every button does.

Before you start

You need someone who can install a GitHub App on your organization's repositories, and someone who can add an app to your Slack workspace. It can be the same person. During early access we do the setup with you on a 30-minute call.

Connect GitHub and Slack

  1. Install the MemoAgent GitHub App on the repositories you choose. It reads pull requests, reviews and review requests there, and nothing in any other repository.
  2. Add MemoAgent to your Slack workspace. It reads who people are, with their time zone and status, and sends each person their messages. It doesn't read your conversations.
  3. We match each teammate's GitHub and Slack accounts, so every item reaches the right person.

Your Daily Brief

Each person gets their own Brief as a direct message from MemoAgent, on weekdays at 9:30 in their own time zone. We can set another time for anyone. It only comes when something needs you, and never after 20:00. It holds up to five items, in three sections:

  • Blocked: your pull requests that have waited a full working day for a review.
  • Waiting on you: reviews you owe, once their author has waited a full working day.
  • Your priorities: your pull requests with requested changes and no new commits for two working days, or with a merge conflict.

A working day is a full Monday to Friday day, counted in the reviewer's time zone (in the author's for requested changes), so weekends don't count. Before your Brief goes out, MemoAgent reads each pull request from GitHub again, so anything fixed since drops out.

The buttons

  • Open PR opens the pull request on GitHub.
  • Nudge reviewer is on your own blocked pull requests. After you confirm, each reviewer it's waiting on gets one reminder with the link, at most once a day for each reviewer and pull request.
  • Not a blocker is on your own items. After you confirm, MemoAgent stops listing that pull request in everyone's Briefs until what it flagged is answered.

Reviewers see only Open PR on the reviews they owe.

Stall alerts

When a review on your pull request stalls during your working hours, Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 18:00 your time, you get a private message within 15 minutes, with the same buttons as the Brief. You get at most 3 a day, and a stall found outside those hours waits for your next Brief. Reviewers never get alerts: they hear from MemoAgent only when you nudge them.

Your Brief on demand

Type /memoagent brief in Slack to see your Brief right now. Only you see the reply. /memoagent help lists the commands.

Time zones and time off

MemoAgent follows each person's time zone from their Slack profile, and checks it every 6 hours. While someone's Slack status says they're on vacation, out sick or out of office, or their account is deactivated, they get no Brief and no stall alerts. If the status ends before 20:00, the Brief comes later that day.

What MemoAgent keeps

Each Brief is about your own work. MemoAgent stores pull request titles, states and links, who was asked to review what and when, and people's names, emails, time zones and account IDs. It keeps no archive of your messages, and your data never trains a model. The FAQ has the details.
